Rio Grande Sports Information
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Brescia University parlayed a pair of 10th inning errors into two unearned runs and then survived the University of Rio Grande's comeback attempt in the bottom of the frame for a 5-3 victory, Sunday night, in River States Conference baseball action at a chilly and damp VA Memorial Stadium.
The Bearcats improved to 18-7 overall and 6-7 in conference play with the victory.
Rio Grande slipped to 14-21 overall and 5-8 in the RSC with the loss.
Brescia overcame a pair of early one-run deficits, pushing across across a two-out eighth inning run on a single to left by Camden DeWitt to knot the score at 3-3.
That's how things stood when the Bearcats came to bat in the 10th and took a lead they would not relinquish.
Artem Logvinov reached on an error to open the inning before moving to second thanks to another error on a pickoff attempt and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Bryce Gamble was then intentionally walked before DeWitt followed with a bunt along the first base line which refused to go foul, as Logvinov raced home with the go ahead run.
One out later, Gavin Huebner was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Miguel Marcos followed with a walk to force home an insurance marker.
Rio Grande mounted an immediate threat in the bottom of the inning when senior Likeiry Jimenez (Reading, PA) led off with a double to left-center and freshman Gregory Catano (Miami, FL) followed with a walk.
One out later, both runners moved into scoring position after executing a double-steal, but the comeback fizzled when Cason Troutman - the last of three Brescia pitchers - ended the game by striking out each of the final two batters.
Rio Grande had spotted the Bearcats a 1-0 first inning lead before taking a 2-1 edge themselves in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by junior Josiah Devapalan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) and Catano.
Brescia knotted the score at 2-all in the second on a solo home run by Gamble, but the RedStorm regained the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by senior Waskar Martinez (Santiago, D.R.) and that's how things stayed until the late-game drama.
Logvinov had three hits in the win for the Bearcats, while Gamble and DeWitt had two hits each.
Christian Pinson got the win in relief for Brescia, allowing one hit over 2-1/3 scoreless innings.
Redshirt sophomore Jacob Napier (Alexandria, KY) took the loss for Rio, allowing a hit, three walks and the two unearned runs over 1-2/3 innings.
The two teams close out their weather-delayed weekend series on Monday with a doubleheader at Marshall University's Jack Cook Field in Huntington, W.Va.
The nine-inning opener is scheduled for a 10 a.m. first pitch, with a seven-inning nightcap at approximately 1:30 p.m.
