
Eagles sweep pair from RedStorm, take series

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway University rebounded from a series-opening loss to the University of Rio Grande on Friday afternoon by limiting the RedStorm to just three in a sweep of their Saturday afternoon River States Conference baseball doubleheader at Tracy Farmer-Don Ball Stadium.
The Eagles swept the twin bill by scores of 12-2 in seven innings and 7-1, improving to 13-14 overall and 7-5 against conference foes.
Rio Grande slipped to 13-16 overall and 5-4 in the RSC.
Midway used big innings to blow things open in both games.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the home fourth inning of game one before exploding for six runs. They added four runs in the seventh to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.
Game two, which was scheduled for seven innings, was tied at 1-1 heading to the home half of third when another six-run outburst put the hosts in front to stay.
Josh Halterman led Midway in the opener, going 4-for-5 with four RBI, while Grant Hotchkiss was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Barrett McGill had two hits and drove in a run.
Eli Glasscock added a double and a run batted in for the Eagles, while Tommy Henninger started and got the win after allowing three hits and a run over four innings.
Senior Gabe Carter (Huntington, WV) started and lost for the RedStorm, surrendering three hits, five walks and five runs over 3-2/3 innings.
Freshman Gregory Catano (Miami, FL) had two hits in the loss, while junior Josiah Devapalan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada), senior Waskar Martinez (Santiago, D.R.) and freshman Riley Wooldridge (Cincinnati, OH) all had a double.
In the nightcap, Glasscock went 2-for-4 with a home run and Isaac Tencza drove in a pair of runs to lead Midway.
Dylan Burton started and got the win for the Eagles, allowing four hits and an unearned run over five innings.
Freshman Eli Allen (Urbana, OH) started and lost for Rio, giving up six hits and seven runs in 2-2/3 innings.
Redshirt sophomore Brett Haskins (Evans, WV) was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the RedStorm.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action on Friday when it opens a three-game weekend series at Oakland City University.
