HOWELL, Mich. - Host Cleary University rallied from a first inning deficit for a game one win and then controlled game two throughout for a doubleheader sweep of the University of Rio Grande, Tuesday afternoon, in non-conference baseball action at Lake Trust Stadium.
The Cougars spotted the RedStorm a 4-0 first inning lead in the opener before rallying to post a 5-4 victory, while game two resulted in a 9-4 triumph by the home team.
Cleary pushed its season record to 10-8 with the sweep.
Rio Grande slipped to 10-12 with the two losses.
The RedStorm raced to a 4-0 first inning lead in game one thanks in large part to a home run by junior Keniel Rosado (Juncos, P.R.) and a two-run double by senior Waskar Martinez (Santiago, D.R.), but the Cougars got one run back in the second inning before gaining the lead with four fourth inning markers.
Rio Grande loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning, but couldn't score.
The RedStorm also put its lead batter on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to push across the tying run.
Freshman Gabe Fouch (Leesburg, OH), the second of six Rio pitchers, took the loss after allowing a hit, a walk and two runs in one-third of an inning.
Nolan Green, the second of four Cleary pitchers, got the win with a pair of scoreless innings. Ryan Lieng allowed two hits over 2-2/3 scoreless innings for a save.
Hector Montilla had two hits in the win, while Austin Vincent had an RBI double.
In the nightcap, Cleary scored three times in the second inning and once in the third for a 4-0 lead.
Rio Grande got one of the runs back in the fourth, but the Cougars settled the issue by scoring five times in the bottom of the frame.
Ten different players had one hit each for CU. Joey Parinello hit a solo home run, while Vincent double and drove in three runs and Connor Boone finished with two RBI.
Jacob Savina allowed six hits and a run over four innings to get the win for Cleary, while senior Justin Anaya Brownsville, TX) started and lost for Rio after surrendering a hit, two walks and three runs over two innings.
Redshirt sophomore Brett Haskins (Evans, WV) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the loss for the RedStorm, while freshman Riley Wooldridge (Cincinnati, OH) doubled and drove in a run.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday when it hosts West Virginia University Tech in River States Conference play at Bob Evans Field.
