PIPPA PASSES, Ky. - Alice Lloyd College opened its 2025 baseball season in grand style on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from the University of Rio Grande at Frank Mullinax Field.
The Eagles won the opener, 6-2, before posting a 10-8 triumph in the nightcap. Both games were seven-inning contests.
Rio Grande lost for a second and third straight time, falling to 2-3 on the young season.
In game one, Alice Lloyd followed up a two-run second inning with three third inning runs and a single marker in the fourth.
Rio Grande pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to avoid a shutout.
Jaden Huff went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead the winning effort for ALC, while Carson Tate was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in and Caleb Justice had two hits and scored twice.
Challen Massengill also homered and drove in two runs for the Eagles, while Kyle Johnson had a double.
Colton Lovelace, the second of three Alice Lloyd pitchers, picked up the win. He allowed three hits and an unearned run over two innings.
Redshirt junior Evan Lewis (Carrollton, OH), the second of seven Rio hurlers, took the loss. He allowed three hits and two runs - both unearned - in 2/3 of an inning.
Senior Beiker Fuentes (Crystal Lake, IL) had two hits, junior Josiah Devapalan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) doubled and freshman Gregory Catano (Santo Domingo, D.R.) drove in a run for the RedStorm.
Alice Lloyd started game two on the right foot as well, jumping to a 6-1 lead after two innings.
Rio Grande forged ahead with three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth, but the Eagles scored twice in the home fifth to forge an 8-8 deadlock before scoring twice more in the bottom of the sixth to secure the sweep.
Cory Jefferson tripled, doubled and drove in two runs for ALC, while Diego Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Lovelace added two hits of his own and an RBI.
Dawson Beckett doubled and drove in two runs for the home team, while Grover Maynard contributed an RBI double of his own.
Jacob Ayers, the last of three ALC pitchers, got the win.
Redshirt sophomore Brett Haskins (Evans, WV), the sixth of seven Rio pitchers, was tagged with the loss.
Senior Likeiry Jimenez (Reading, PA) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the RedStorm, while junior Casey Funk (Houston, TX) also doubled and drove in a run.
Fuentes, senior Waskar Martinez (Santiago, D.R.) and Devapalan all drove in one run each in a losing cause.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday in the Clash of Conferences at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
The RedStorm will face Madonna (Mich.) University in their 11 a.m. opener before squaring off with the University of the Cumberlands at 5 p.m.
