Hamm, McCarthy pace Rio women to 5th place finish

     LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Laura Hamm and Mackenzie McCarthy ran to Top 10 finishes and led the University of Rio Grande women's cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the Silver Division of the Louisville Cross Country Classic, Saturday afternoon, at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
     Hamm, a freshman from South Point, Ohio completed the 5k course in 19:24, good enough for seventh place in the field of 208 runners.
     McCarthy, a senior from Akron, Ohio, placed eighth in a time of 19:37.
     As a team, Rio Grande was fifth among the 24 scoring teams and 33 competing schools with 166 points.
     Ursuline (Ohio) won the team crown with 79 points, while Point Park University (104), Indiana University East (126) and Shawnee State University (148) also finished in front of the RedStorm.
     Point Park's Cassondra O'Connor had the top individual time, crossing the line in 18:37.
     In addition to Hamm and McCarthy, Rio Grande was represented by junior Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH), who finished 14th in a time of 19:51; redshirt junior Grace Forrest (Woodstock, OH), who placed 62nd with a mark of 21:17; freshman Kylie Gilmore (Ironton, OH), who was 101st in a time of 22:21; and freshman Rebecca Spohn (New Concord, OH), who finished 159th in a time of 24:24.
     The RedStorm return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Angel Mounds Invitational in Evansville, Ind.
     Rio was originally scheduled to host the college division of the Patty Forgey Invitational on the same date, but event was scrapped due to a low number of registered participants.
