
RedStorm rolls past Eagles, Tigers

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's volleyball team honored a handful of seniors in pre-game ceremonies and then went about the task smacking around a pair of foes from the Bluegrass State.
The RedStorm picked up a 25-12, 25-10, 25-19 triumph over Alice Lloyd College in River States Conference action before posting a 25-17, 16-25, 25-13, 25-15 victory over an old Mid-South Conference foe - Georgetown College - on Saturday afternoon at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Head coach Billina Donaldson's squad finished the day at 25-8 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
Alice Lloyd, which also lost to Georgetown, headed home at 6-26 overall and 0-15 in the RSC.
The Tigers saw their overall record move to 7-17 with the split.
In the opening match against ALC, Rio recorded a season-best .402 attack percentage (44 kills, 11 errors, 82 swings) and needed just 56 minutes to dispose of the Eagles.
Senior Amanda Rarick (Canal Winchester, OH) had 14 kills to pace the RedStorm, who faced just one deficit - 1-0 in the third set - in the entire match.
Junior Elle McLoughlin (Zanesville, OH) had 37 assists and six of the teams's 12 service aces, while junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) had 14 digs and sophomore Averie Bruce (Baltimore, OH) finished with one solo block and four block assists.
Alice Lloyd, which tallied a .099 attack percentage (24 kills, 15 errors, 91 swings), was led by Kyleah Ward's seven kills.
Rose Scotello had 11 assists, while Camryn Thompson finished with six digs and a pair of service aces in a losing cause.
Outside of its set two loss - a set in which the hosts had just one more kill (10) than attack errors (9) - Rio Grande essentially controlled its match with Georgetown as well.
The RedStorm finished with a respectable .240 attack mark (50 kills, 20 errors, 125 swings) as a team, while the Tigers hit just .050 (31 kills, 25 errors, 120 attacks).
Rarick had a match-best 17 kills for Rio, while freshman Katelynn Coey (Glouster, OH) had 10 of her own.
McLoughlin totaled 44 assists, while senior Sofia Otero Marrero (Vega Baja, P.R.) and Sedgwick were credited with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
Senior Avery Huntzinger (Canal Winchester, OH) had a trio of service aces in the win.
Gareth Bruce had 15 kills and 11 digs for Georgetown, while Faith Miller and Viannie Kazan tallied 16 and 10 assists, respectively.
Kazan and Reese Speed had 10 digs each in a losing cause, while Maria Tarazona had three service aces and Maria Alves had six block assists.
Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday night when it hosts West Virginia University-Tech in another RSC contest.
