Rio women drop Olivet Nazarene, fall to Warriors

     FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Rio Grande women's volleyball team knocked off Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University before falling to host Indiana Tech University in what, essentially, was the championship match of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament, Saturday afternoon, at the Schaefer Center.
     The RedStorm knocked off Olivet Nazarene in straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-21, then was swept by Indiana Tech in a battle of tournament unbeatens 25-20, 25-19, 25-11.
     Rio Grande finished the tournament with an overall mark of 11-4.
     Freshman Katelynn Coey (Glouster, OH) had a career-high 12 kills to go along with two solo blocks and a block assist in the win over ONU, while senior Amanda Rarick (Canal Winchester, OH) added 11 of her own for the RedStorm, which finished with a solid .257 attack percentage (44 kills, 15 errors, 113 swings).
     Junior Elle McLoughlin (Zanesville, OH) had 32 assists, four service aces and 11 digs for Rio, with sophomore Jenna Harrison (Gallipolis, OH) recording 16 digs.
     Halle Nicholas led Olivet Nazarene in a losing cause with 11 kills, while Analiese Fredin tallied 29 assists, Breanna Lamie had 14 digs and Kaitlyn Kolb finished with a solo block and a block assist.
     In the finale against Indiana Tech, Rarick and sophomore Kelli Stewart (Waverly, OH) had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the RedStorm.
     McLoughlin had 26 assists and two service aces en route to a spot on the all-tournament team, while junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) had seven digs and two service aces of her own.
     Sophomore McKenna Diederich (Pickerington, OH) topped Rio with a solo block and a block assist.
     Indiana Tech, which remained unbeaten in its own tourney since 2018, hammered out 41 kills against only nine errors over 83 swings for a sizzling .386 attack percentage.
     Noelle Vanoort had 14 kills, eight digs and two solo blocks for the Warriors, while Amelia Schultz totaled 10 kills and three block assists.
     Sara Gomperts had 31 assists and five service aces in the winning effort.
     Rio Grande will return to action on Sept. 17 when it hosts Indiana University East in its River States Conference opener.
     First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Newt Oliver Arena.
