Pioneers end win streak for RedStorm

      PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Point Park University parlayed a strong showing at the net into a straight sets victory over the University of Rio Grande, Friday afternoon, in River States Conference volleyball action at PPU's Student Center Gym.
      The Pioneers got the win by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-21, improving to 15-4 overall, 9-0 in conference play and taking a commanding three-game lead over the RedStorm in the RSC East Division in the process.
      The division winner will serve as the host for the conference tournament next month.
      Rio Grande, which had a five-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in league play.
      Point Park ended Friday's match with 44 kills and just nine errors in 94 swings for a sizzling .372 attack percentage.
      Stephanie Rivera-Pacheco and Madison Sima had 14 and 12 kills, respectively, for the Pioneers. Rivera-Pacheco also had four of PPU's seven service aces and two of its 10 block assists to go along with a team-best eight digs.
      Rio Grande actually led for much of set one, including 17-10 after a service ace by junior Kyli Ricker (Plain City, OH), but Point Park scored 15 of the final 19 winners in the stanza to rescue an early match lead.
      Rio also led 13-12 in set two following a kill by junior Shalea Byrd (Canal Winchester, OH), but the Pioneers reeled off 13 of the final 17 points in the period to take a commanding lead.
      The RedStorm's only lead in the final set came on a service ace by Kayla Sedgwick to begin the set. PPU score the next three points and never trailed again.
      Star Lakin and Ashlynn Gulakowski had 16 assists each in the winning effort for the Pioneers, while Ashley Castelli also had eight digs and Melissa Schroeder had three block assists.
      Junior Amanda Rarick (Canal Winchester, OH) led Rio Grande with 11 kills, while sophomore Avery Huntzinger added 31 assists and senior Kacie Trame finished with seven digs and pair of service aces.
      Senior Jess Youse (Pettisville, OH) had a solo block and two block assists to go along with eight kills and a .312 swing percentage.
      As a team, the RedStorm finished with 38 kills and 21 errors in 107 attacks for a .159 percentage.
      Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Alice Lloyd College for a 7 p.m. first serve at the Newt Oliver Arena.
