RedStorm women rally to claim RSC title

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women parlayed four first-place finishes and four runner-up performances on day two into an overall victory as the RedStorm won the 2025 River States Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, Saturday afternoon, at the Stockmeister Track and Field.
     Head coach Matt Paxton's squad, which found itself in third place following Friday's opening day of competition, tallied 150.5 points to outdistance Brescia University (134.5 pts.) for the team title.
     Indiana University Kokomo was third with 128.5 points.
     Sophomore Laura Hamm (South Point, OH) led the RedStorm's winning effort by claiming first place in both the 800-meter run (2:18.48) and the 1,500-meter run (4:57.37), while freshman Kylie Montgomery (Coal Grove, OH) won the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.19 and finished second in both the 100 (12.50) and 200 (25.77).
     Hamm was voted as the standout track athlete of the Championship following her two victories. She ends the season as one of the most decorated athletes in the RSC, adding her Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year award to her Newcomer of the Year awards in both indoor track and cross country.
     Montgomery's finish in the 200 on the third-to-last event of the meet put Rio Grande in front to stay.
     Additionally, a win by junior Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH) in the 5,000-meter run (18:08.07) and and a runner-up finish by Rio's 4x400 relay team - comprised of senior Jayden Roach (Baltimore, OH), senior Kendra Grooms (West Union, OH), Montgomery and Hamm - with a time of 4:03.52 sealed the victory.
     Rio Grande also got a runner-up finish from freshman Rebecca Cadle (Bidwell, OH) in the 100-meter hurdles after she crossed the finish line in a time of 16.00.
     Cadle also scored points toward the team championship by placing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:11.41.
     Other scoring performances on Saturday by the Rio women came from Grooms, who was fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:00.99; Roach, who was fifth in the 400 (1:01.52) and sixth in the 800 (2:26.93); and junior Chianti Marks (Birmingham, England), who was sixth in the triple jump with an effort of 9.66m.
     Rio's 4x100 relay squad - which included Cadle, freshman Stella Gilcher (Amesville, OH), Montgomery and Roach - also scored by taking third place in a time of 52.09.
     Other award winners included IU Kokomo's Sydney Duncan as Field Athlete of the Year, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College's Kyla Bradberry as Newcomer of the Year and Brescia University's Sandy Moran as Coach of the Year.
     Duncan won three gold medals, taking the top spot in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put.
     Bradberry left no doubt on the status of the top sprinter in the league, winning both the 100 and 200 meter races.
     Moran guided the Bearcats to a conference runner-up finish.
