Rio's Kerns, Roach earn wins in indoor opener

     MARIETTA, Ohio - Two athletes representing the University of Rio Grande recorded wins, while six others posted a pair of Top 10 finishes to lead the RedStorm women's track and field team at Friday's Marietta First Glimpse Meet hosted by Marietta College at the Dyson Baudo Rec Center.
     The event, which was not team scored, was the indoor season opener for Rio.
     Sophomore Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH) and junior Jayden Roach (Baltimore, OH) posted victories in the 5,000-meter run and the 600-meter run, respectively.
     Kerns had a winning time of 18:54.03, while Roach's winning mark was 1:44.31.
     The group posting two Top 10 outings individually included sophomore Paris DeBord (Chillicothe, OH), who was second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.47 and fourth in the 200-meter dash at 27.70; junior Kendra Grooms (West Union, OH), who placed second in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:49.89 and fourth in the high jump with an effort of 1.50m; freshman Emily Duncan (Chesapeake, OH), who was second in the high jump at 1.55m and fourth in the long jump at 4.86m; freshman Chanee Cremeens (Gallipolis, OH), who finished second in the shot put with a heave of 11.36m and eighth in the weight throw with a toss covering 9.53m; sophomore Karley Kouns (Wheelersburg, OH), who was third in the weight throw at 12.42m and 10th in the shot put with an effort of 8.72m; and sophomore Megan Diven (Caledonia, OH), who was fourth in the shot put at 10.88m and sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 11.47m.
     Also posting Top 10 performances for the RedStorm was freshman Isabella McVey (Stewart, OH), who was second in the 1-mile run with a time of 6:28.89; sophomore Chloe Lovett (Washington Court House, OH), who was third in the 600-meter run at 1:53.30; and sophomore Olivia Sheward-Perdue (Jackson, OH), who placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:41.65.
     Rio's 4x400 relay unit - comprised of Grooms, Kerns, Lovett and Roach, posted a second place finish after crossing in 4:23.40.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Jan. 12 when it returns to Marietta for the Pioneer Classic.
