Late goal sends RedStorm past Crimson Pride
Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Once the pregame introductions of the University of Rio Grande's eight seniors was complete, the RedStorm went about spending the afternoon peppering shot after shot at their guests from Indiana University Columbus.
Finally, with the match entering its stretch run, one of those attempts managed to make its way into the back of the net.
Neveah Peffers' goal with 5:31 left to play snapped a scoreless tie and gave Rio Grande a 1-0 win over the Crimson Pride, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm improved to 4-3-5 overall and 2-1-1 in the RSC with the victory.
The loss left IU Columbus at 2-8-2 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Crimson Pride failed to record a shot attempt in the contest, while Rio Grande managed 25 tries - including 19 in the second half - and 13 shots on frame.
The RedStorm also had all but one of the nine corner kick chances in the match.
None of the opportunities panned out, though, until Peffers - a freshman from Dresden, Ohio - gathered in a long, lofting midfield pass from senior Jitske De Muijnk (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) and placed a shot just over the outstretched arm of IUC net-minder Zoe Bippus, who had made a number of dazzling stops prior to that point.
Bippus finished with 12 saves in a losing cause.
Senior Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain) got the clean sheet win in goal for Rio Grande.
The RedStorm are scheduled to return to action on Thursday night when they travel to Beckley, W.Va. to face West Virginia University Tech.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Paul Cline YMCA Soccer Complex.
