RedStorm women, Golden Bears play to 1-1 draw
Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - It may not have been a loss, but it was a result which made the University of Rio Grande's hopes of earning the top seed in the upcoming River States Conference Championship a tad more difficult to attain.
The RedStorm failed to maintain an early lead and eventually played West Virginia University Tech to a 1-1 draw, Saturday afternoon, RSC women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
Rio Grande finished the day at 7-4-2 overall and 4-0-2 in conference play.
Head coach Brooke Perkins' team now trails Oakland City University (4-0 RSC) for the top spot in the league standings. If both maintain their winning ways, it would set up a showdown for the conference regular season championship - and the top seed in tourney play - when the RedStorm hosts the Mighty Oaks in the regular season finale for both teams on Nov. 2.
WVU-Tech dropped to 4-3-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the RSC as a result of the tie.
Rio took an early lead when sophomore Amora Albano (Albany, OH) found the back of the net off of a touch from senior Charlotte Pilgrim (Middlesbrough, England) just 9:47 into the match.
That's how things stayed until the Golden Bears roared to life after the halftime intermission and scored the equalizer with 32:46 left to play on a goal by Stheisy Lemus. Nora Martin-Mora Segura had the assist.
From that point on, Rio Grande had just one corner kick opportunity and never managed a shot on goal.
In fact, Tech had just one shot on frame of its own over the final 57-plus minutes, but Mora Segura's attempt with 2:27 to play was stopped by Rio senior keep Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain).
Rio Grande finished with a 12-8 edge in shots, including 6-5 in shots on frame.
The match only had three corner kick chances, with two belonging to the Golden Bears.
Vilades Marin had four saves for the RedStorm.
Sandra Garcia Quilez had five stops in net for WVU-Tech.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Thursday afternoon when it travels to Midway University for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
