Fast start fuels Rio women to victory

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande bolted to a commanding first half lead and cruised to a 4-0 triumph over St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Thursday afternoon, in River States Conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
     The RedStorm upped their overall mark to 5-4-1 with the win, while moving to 2-0-1 against RSC foes.
     The Pomeroys dropped to 1-6-2 overall and 0-2 in league play with the loss.
     Rio Grande enjoyed a 3-0 halftime advantage, recording its trio of markers in a span of just under seven minutes.
     Sophomore Morgan Fannin (Circleville, OH) netted the game's first goal with 13:25 left before the break, while sophomore Amora Albano (Albany, OH) made a nifty move to elude a pair of SMWC defenders and score an unassisted goal of her own just 89 seconds later.
     The RedStorm's final goal of the half came when junior Jitske De Muijnk (Nymegen, The Netherlands) scored on a penalty kick with 6:48 remaining before the intermission.
     Albano set the final score with another unassisted goal with 35:09 left in the contest. It was Albano's second straight two-goal game.
     Rio Grande finished with a 24-5 edge in shots overall and a 14-2 cushion in shots on frame.
     The RedStorm also had four of the game's seven corner kick opportunities.
     Senior Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain), the reigning RSC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded two saves en route to a clean sheet effort in goal for Rio.
     Dree Wilson had 10 saves in a losing cause for the Pomeroys.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Brescia University for Senior Day.
     Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
