Rio women topple UC Clermont
Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - It was a disappointing end to an otherwise successful night.
The University of Rio Grande lost its bid for a shutout win in the closing seconds, but did emerge with a 2-1 triumph over the University of Cincinnati-Clermont, Wednesday evening, in non-conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm improved to 2-0 with the victory.
UC-Clermont, which was coming off of a shutout win over another River States Conference squad - Brescia University - in its season opener four days earlier, dropped to 1-1.
Rio Grande, which also saw a potential shutout against Bluefield (Va.) University in its season opener go by the wayside when the Rams scored in the closing minutes, scored early in each half.
Senior Amelia Willis (Waverly, OH) scored on a header off of a corner kick by junior Jitske de Muijnk (Nymegen, Netherlands) just over three minutes into the match, while de Muijnk scored from 25 yards out just 59 seconds into the second half to make it 2-0.
That's how things stayed until Kaylee Rose found the back of the net for the Cougars with just 2.5 seconds left in the contest.
UC-Clermont finished with an 18-12 edge in shots overall and a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Rio Grande senior net-minder Alba Vilades (Barcelona, Spain) made a number of nice stops over the course of the night and finished with 11 saves.
Jordan Geis made four saves in a losing cause for the Cougars.
Rio Grande returns to action on Sunday when it entertains fourth-ranked Tennessee Southern in an 11 a.m. kickoff.
