BECKLEY, W.Va. - Host West Virginia University-Tech had more shots overall and more shots on goal, but the University of Rio Grande netted the game's only score in a 1-0 win over the rival Golden Bears, Thursday evening, in River States Conference women's soccer action at the Paul Cline YMCA Soccer Complex.
The RedStorm (5-4-4 overall, 5-0-2 RSC) won for the fifth straight time and ran their unbeaten streak to nine consecutive outings, while also maintaining their lead in the conference standings.
WVU-Tech slipped to 3-9-1 overall and 2-4 in league play.
The Golden Bears had an 8-2 first half edge in overall shots and a 12-9 advantage for the game, while also enjoying an 8-6 cushion in shots on goal for the match.
Rio Grande senior goal keeper Morgan Nutter (Ashville, OH) recorded eight saves in the winning effort.
Sandra Garcia Quilez tallied four saves in a losing cause for the Golden Bears.
The only goal of the contest came just under 6-1/2 minutes into the second half when freshman Morgan Fannin (Circleville, OH) - fresh off a two-goal, two-assist performance in Saturday's win at Brescia - found the back of the net off an assist by senior Julia Döller (Meiningen, Germany).
WVU-Tech managed just two other scoring chances the rest of the way - including none over the final 12:44 of the match - but were turned away each time.
Rio Grande will return to action on Saturday afternoon when its hosts RSC newcomer Indiana University-Purdue University-Columbus at Evan E. Davis Field.
Senior Day activities are slated to get underway at 3 p.m., with the match itself kicking off at 3:30 p.m.
