Rio women post third straight draw

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - There must be something about a frantic finish that appeals to the University of Rio Grande women's soccer team.
Julia Döller's goal with 1:02 left to play allowed the RedStorm to rally for a 3-3 tie with Indiana University East, Saturday night, in River States Conference play at Evan E. Davis Field.
The finish gave Rio Grande (0-4-3 overall, 0-0-2 RSC) its third consecutive draw and its second consecutive nail-biting finish.
On Thursday night, the RedStorm were blanked from the outset before scoring twice in the final 4:36 of the match to forge a 2-2 deadlock at rival Shawnee State.
IU East finished the night at 0-5-4 overall and 0-0-2 in league play.
The Red Wolves appeared in line for their first win of the season after scoring twice in a span of just under seven minutes to erase a 2-1 second half deficit.
Maggie Bischoff netted the equalizer with 11:11 left to play, scoring off the rebound of a shot by teammate Ema Nunley bounced off the crossbar, before assisting on the go-ahead marker by Sophie Pohlabel with 4:25 remaining.
Döller, a senior from Meiningen, Germany, spoiled the visitor's celebration in the waning seconds, though, when she found the back of the net with a loose ball that got away from IUE goal keeper Kylie O'Leary, who had just stopped a shot by Rio sophomore Saskia Vos (Sydney, Australia).
The Red Wolves managed one last shot with 25 seconds left to play, but Bischoff's attempt was saved by Rio senior net-minder Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain) to preserve the tie.
Vos had each of Rio Grande's first two scores.
Her left-footed boot from the top of the 18-yard box just two 2:35 into the match got past O'Leary for an early RedStorm lead, but the Red Wolves knotted the score just over nine minutes later when Denise Davalos played a touch from Bischoff and blooped a shot from 20 yards out on the left wing which cleared the head of Vilades Marin and landed in the back of the net.
That's how things stayed until another long-range marker by Vos, who played the rebound of a missed shot by junior teammate Ali Seals (Chillicothe, OH) and pooched a shot from 25 yards out over the head of O'Leary.
Rio Grande finished with a 15-11 advantage in overall shots and a 10-8 cushion in shots on goal.
Vilades Marin had five saves for the RedStorm.
O'Leary stopped seven shots for IU East, which had all four of the game's corner kick chances.
Rio Grande returns to action next Thursday when it hosts Midway University in another RSC matchup.
Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
