PRESTONSBURG, Ky. - A big second day improvement allowed the University of Rio Grande women's golf team to secure a third-place finish in the Alice Lloyd College Fall Invitational, which wrapped up its two-day run on Tuesday at Stonecrest Golf Club.
The RedStorm, who were tied with Ohio Christian for third place after Monday's opening round, shots 19 strokes better and had the second-best team showing of the day at 53-over par.
The big advance allowed Rio to separate from the Trailblazers and nearly catch Thomas More (Ky.) University for second place.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College won the five-team event by finishing at 76-over par 652, while Thomas More was second at 122-over 698 and Rio Grande was third at 125-over 701.
SMWC's Bailey Baker took medalist honors after finishing at 12-over par 156.
Rio Grande tallied three of the top 11 individual scores, with sophomore Maddi Meadows (Gallipolis, OH) leading the way for the RedStorm in sixth place at 23-over 167. Senior Molly Fitzwater (Gallipolis, OH) was ninth at 28-over 172 and freshman Emma Hammons (Gallipolis, OH) missed a Top 10 finish by one stroke with a 33-over 177 for 11th place.
Also representing Rio was freshman Katherine McGrath (Columbus, OH), who was 15th at 41-over 185 and freshman Kimmi Aubrey (Wellston, OH), who placed 18th at 49-over 193.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Ohio Christian Invitational in Circleville, Ohio.
