Rio women tie for 5th in season opener

     ANGOLA, Ind. - Cristina Hidalgo fired a 7-over par 79 to lead the University of Rio Grande's "A" team to a fifth-place finish in the Trine University Women's Golf Kick-Off Classic, Tuesday afternoon, at the Zollner Golf Club.
     Hidalgo, a graduate student from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, who is also serving as an assistant coach for the RedStom, finished in sixth place individually and helped Rio to a team score of 74-over par 362, tying Siena Heights (Mich.) University for fifth place.
     Rio Grande also fielded a "B" team, which finished in 15th place at 187-over par 475.
     Grace (Ind.) College won the 15-team event with a score of 35-over par 328, while Indiana University East's "A" team was second at 40-over 328 and host Trine University finished third at 56-over 344.
     Joining Hidalgo on the RedStorm's "A" team was freshman Maddi Meadows (Gallipolis, OH), who finished 30th at 18-over par 90; freshman Julie Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was part of a three-way tie for 42nd place at 23-over par 95; senior Bailey Meadows (Gallipolis, OH), who was among four players tied for 53rd place at 26-over 98; and junior Molly Fitzwater (Gallipolis, OH), who was 73rd at 34-over 106.
     The Rio "B" team was paced by junior Avery Minton (Gallipolis, OH), who was one of three players in 60th place at 29-over par 101.
     The remainder of the "B" unit was comprised of sophomore Chelsea Daubenspeck (Bucyrus, OH), who was 77th at 39-over 111; freshman Mia Basim (Athens, OH), who tied for 81st place at 51-over 123; and sophomore Natalie Shriner (Thornville, OH), who was 84th at 68-over 140.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Friday for the first round of the 36-hole Players Club Invitational in Yorktown, Ind.
