RedStorm women finish runner-up, Moody wins individual title

     COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's bowling team saw a late rally fall just short, but the RedStorm still managed a runner-up finish in the DO Apparel-Brunswick Collegiate Open.
     The two-day, season-opening tournament concluded on Sunday at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.
     Rio Grande battled Muskingum University to the final frame - literally - before falling eight pins shy of the Muskies.
     The RedStorm, which trailed by 76 pins going into the last of the nine team games in the tournament, finished with 8,182 pins.
     Muskingum, the reigning club team national champions, toppled a total of 8,190 pins to claim the team crown. Tiffin University was a distant third at 7,357 pins.
     Rio Grande did have the tournament's overall individual winner in senior Caity Moody (Xenia, OH), who finished with 1,841 pins over nine games for a 204.6 average. She also established a new program single-game high with a 279 in game five.
     The RedStorm had two others finish inside the top seven overall in freshman Lina Fernandez (Mechanicsburg, PA) and sophomore Payton Goodman (Cardington, OH).
     Fernandez finished fifth with 1,631 pins over nine games, while Goodman was seventh after taking down 1,563 pins in nine games.
     Along with Moody, Rio was also represented on the All-Tournament team by junior Hannah Halstead (Delaware, OH), who was 13th overall with 1,501 pins in eight rounds. The all-tournament team was comprised of the top eight finishers average-wise, who rolled six or more games.
     Also competing for Rio Grande on the varsity side were sophomore Julie Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was 20th overall with 1,299 pins in eight games and sophomore Jaelyn Hughes (Indian Lake, OH), who was 37th with 347 pins in two games.
     The RedStorm junior varsity team also finished as runner-up to Muskingum. Rio had 5,879 pins, while the Muskies finished with 6,860.
     Tiffin took third in the JV bracket with 3,618 pins.
     Muskingum's Faith Smith had the top individual score among junior varsity participants, finishing sixth overall with 1,585 pins in nin games.
     Freshman Melanie Liming (Georgetown, OH) led Rio's representatives, placing 18th overall and fifth among JV competitors with 1,323 pins over nine games for an average of 147.
     Others repping the RedStorm included junior Megan Foltz (South Point, OH), who was 28th overall with 1,087 pins in eight games; senior Malerie Stanley (Gallipolis, OH), who was 30th with 923 pins in seven games; senior Kayla Sheets (Columbus, OH), who was 31st with 764 pins in six rounds; freshman Addison Jones (Winchester, OH), who was 32nd with 717 pins in six games; senior Emillee-Anne Ross (Wellston, OH), who was 33rd with 626 pins in five games; and freshman Kendall Harrod (Chillicothe, OH), who placed 35th with 439 pins in four games.
     Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on October 5 at the Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament No. 1 in Columbus.
