Dickson sets new school record in RedStorm's season opener

     COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sydney Dickson set a new single-game record score to lead the efforts of the University of Rio Grande women's bowling team in the 2023 Welcome Back Tournament, which concluded Sunday at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.
     Dickson, a senior from Newark, Ohio, rolled a program-record 277 in the fourth of her nine games in the tournament. She finished with 1,722 pins for an average of 191.3, good enough for a seventh place showing among the 53 overall competitors.
     As a team, the RedStorm finished fourth among the five teams in the varsity division with 7,667 pins. Midway University took the team title with 8,787 pins, while the University of the Cumberlands (8,769) and Muskingum University (8,509) rounded out the top three.
     Rio Grande also fielded a pair of junior varsity teams in the tournament, with the No. 1 team finishing third among the four teams in its division with 6,474 pins and the No. 2 team finishing fourth with 5,388 pins. Midway also won the JV team title with 7,486 pins, topping runner-up Muskingum (6,917).
     Joining Dickson as representatives of Rio in the varsity division were senior Caitlyn Moody (Xenia, OH), who placed 14th with 1,591 pins in nine games for an average of 176.8; freshman Julianna Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who averaged 176.1 with 1,585 pins in nine games for a 15th place finish; junior Sierra Somerville (Gallipolis, OH), who was 36th with 1,084 pins in seven rounds for an average of 154.9; freshman Payton Goodman (Cardington, OH), who was 42nd with 948 pins in six games for an average of 158; and freshman Jaelyn Hughes (Indian Lake, OH), who was 45th with 737 pins in five games for an average of 147.4.
     The RedStorm's No. 1 junior varsity unit was led by freshman Gracie Mae Astry (St. Paris, OH), who was 22nd overall with 1,444 pins in nine games for a 160.4 average. She was joined by sophomore Chelsea Daubenspeck (Bucyrus, OH), who was 27th with 1,384 pins in nine rounds for an average of 153.8; junior Kayla Sheets (Columbus, OH), who finished in 32nd place with 1,240 pins in nine games for an average score of 137.8; freshman Tessa Wells (Jackson, OH), who was 33rd with 1,240 pins in nine games for a 137.8 average; and junior Alyssa Lingenfelter (Adena, OH), who placed 34th with 1,166 pins in nine rounds for an average of 129.6.
     Rio's second JV entry was led by sophomore Megan Foltz (South Point, OH), who grabbed 31st place overall with 1,280 pins in nine games for an average of 142.2. Completing the team was junior Malerie Stanley (Gallipolis, OH), who was 38th with 1,077 pins in nine games for a 119.7 average; junior Haley Shoemaker (Hillsboro, OH), who finished 39th with an average of 118.7 after taking down 1,068 pins in nine rounds; freshman Emily Scott (Wellston, OH), who was 40th with 986 pins in nine games for an average of 109.6; and junior Emillee-Anne Ross (Wellston, OH), who finished 41st with 977 pins in nine games for an average of 108.6.
     Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Oct. 7 at the Ohio Bowling Conference No. 1 Tournament in Columbus.
