RedStorm tames Tigers in Christmas Classic opener

SAN JUAN, P.R. - All 13 players who suited up for the University of Rio Grande women's basketball team scored and the RedStorm rolled from the outset in a 101-37 blitz of InterAmerican University, Tuesday night, as part of the Puerto Rico Christmas Classic at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.
Rio Grande, the 12th-ranked team in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll, improved to 12-1 with a seventh consecutive victory.
The RedStorm scored at least 23 points in all four quarters and limited the Tigers to nine points or less in three of the four stanzas.
Rio Grande shot 52.1 percent for the game overall (38-for-73), helping to fuel a 42-10 scoring advantage in the paint and a 37-8 cushion in points off of turnovers.
InterAmerican connected on just 29.3 percent of its field goal tries (12-for-41), while committing 27 turnovers and ending up on the short end of a 49-22 deficit in rebounding.
Senior Ella Skeens (Chillicothe, OH) scored a game-high 22 points to lead a quartet of double-digit scorers for the RedStorm. She also snared a club-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore Kaylee Darnell (Wheelersburg, OH) added 13 points, while junior Reagan Willingham (Ashville, OH) and sophomore Harlei Antritt (Newark, OH) finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Sophomore Azyiah Williams (Ripley, OH) had five assists and freshman Marlee Grinstead (Albany, OH) finished with six steals.
Wilmarie Ortiz and Nayeli Bonilla had 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tigers. Ortiz also had a pair of steals.
Carolyna Classen pulled down six rebounds in a losing cause, while Lyana Ramos had two assists and Arianna Oyola added two steals of her own.
Rio Grande wraps up its schedule in the Classic when it faces Pontifical Catholic University on Tuesday.
Tipoff is set for 9 a.m. at the Rueben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon.
