LIMA, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande used a big inning early in game one and big inning late in game two to secure a doubleheader sweep of the University of Northwestern Ohio, Tuesday afternoon, in non-conference softball action at Racer Field.
The RedStorm recorded wins by scores of 6-3 and 7-3 to push their season record to 25-7.
UNOH finished the day at 16-11.
Rio Grande scored five times in the second inning of the opener and never looked back, while scoring five times in the sixth inning of the nightcap to erase an early 3-0 deficit.
In game one, junior Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) had a two-run-single and senior Megan Bazler (Portsmouth, OH) added a two-run double to highlight the five-run second inning.
Sophomore Nigella Reck (Covington, OH) tacked on an RBI single in the fifth inning to push the lead to 6-0 before the host Racers tried to make things interesting late by scoring twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth.
Bazler finished 2-for-4 with two doubles in the winning effort, while junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) was 2-for-3 with a double and freshman Madison Brentlinger (Indian Lake, OH) also had a pair of hits.
Senior Madi Ogden (Williamsburg, OH) scattered nine hits and allowed three runs over six innings to get the win, while junior Meg McCallum (Belmont, Ontario, Canada) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn a save.
Karsyn McGlothen suffered the loss for UNOH, allowing 10 hits and all six runs over 5-2/3 innings.
Tess Denning finished 4-for-4 with a double and a run batted in for the hosts, while Anna Ankney and Hailee Edgell had two hits each.
In game two, Denning hit a three-run home run to stake the Racers to a first inning lead before the RedStorm score seven unanswered markers.
Sophomore Trinity Davis (Hartsville, SC) had a run-scoring double in the second and Adams hit a solo home run in the fourth to get Rio within 3-2, but the comeback was completed with the five-run sixth inning explosion.
Bazler hit a two-run home run to put the RedStorm in front for good and Sedgwick later added a two-run single to plate a pair of insurance markers.
Bazler, Reck and Davis all had two hits in the victory and senior Hannah Beers (Springfield, OH) survived the rough start in the pitcher's circle to get the win in a complete game effort.
Lanie Wooten started and lost for UNOH, allowing seven hits and six runs in 5-1/3 innings.
Ankney added a double in the loss for the Racers.
Weather permitting, Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Saturday at rival Shawnee State University.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Doc Singleton Park in West Portsmouth.
