Rio Grande Sports Information
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Madi Ogden cracked a go-ahead, one-out single in the top of the eighth inning and then retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame as the University of Rio Grande upended No. 3-ranked University of the Cumberlands, 6-5, Sunday afternoon, in non-conference softball action at chilly UC Softball Complex.
The RedStorm, who captured the weekend series after splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, improved to 8-4 with the win.
The host Patriots slipped to 8-5 with the loss.
Cumberlands scored single runs in each of the first two innings before Rio Grande countered with four runs in the third and another marker in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage.
Junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) had a two-run single in the third inning, while freshman Delana Landefeld (Williamspor, OH) accounted for the fourth inning run with an RBI groundout.
The Patriots got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning and then tied the game in the home seventh on a two-out error and a run-scoring hit by Bailey Turnbow.
With the International Tie-Breaker Rule in effect, junior Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) moved Sedgwick from second to third base on a groundout before Ogden - a senior from Williamsburg, Ohio - followed with a single to left to snap the deadlock.
In the bottom of the inning, Ogden struck Amber Atkins out looking before inducing Aniyah White to groundout to shortstop and striking out Ryann Livingston looking to end the game.
Sedgwick finished 3-for-4 in the winning effort, while Ogden had two hits.
Ogden, the last of three Rio pitchers, allowed a hit and an unearned run with four strikeouts over 1-2/3 innings to get the win.
Kaitlyn Schofield took the loss in relief for UC, surrendering four hits and a pair of unearned runs over 5-1/3 innings of work.
Turnbow had three hits, including a double, and two RBI for the Patriots, while Marquila Howell went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday with another non-conference twin bill against another Mid-South Conference school.
The RedStorm are slated to play at Georgetown (Ky.) College, with first pitch for game one set for 2 p.m.
