LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Rio Grande's offensive woes continued on Saturday as the RedStorm suffered a rain-delay 4-0 loss to the College of Coastal Georgia on Day 2 of the Grizzly Softball Open hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College.
Rio Grande's second game of the day against Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College was cancelled due to persistent rain.
The contest against Coastal Georgia was delayed at the start by two hours and, when all was said and done, Rio Grande (4-3) had suffered its third straight shutout loss.
The last time the RedStorm was blanked in three consecutive games was on April 2 and 3, 2010 after being swept in a home doubleheader against Lindsey Wilson and dropping the first game of a twin bill against the Blue Raiders the following day.
On Saturday, head coach Chris Hammond's squad was limited to a pair of singles and a double by junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH).
Coastal Georgia snapped a scoreless tie with a pair of sixth inning runs before adding a pair of insurance markers in the seventh.
Brooke Purdue led off the sixth with her second double of the day, was bunted to third and scored on a wild pitch. One out later, McKenzie Collins homered to right to make it 2-0.
The Mariners' seventh inning runs came on a two-out, two-run double by Rylee Mills.
Rily Andrews also had two hits for CCG, which improved to 8-3 with the win.
Emilia Clemons started and got her third win in as many decisions, walking three and fanning four in the complete game effort.
Senior Madi Ogden (Williamsburg, OH) started and lost for Rio Grande, allowing eight hits and two walks along with 10 strikeouts.
Rio Grande is scheduled to play Defiance College in its home opener on Saturday, but the doubleheader may be moved to Sunday and to an alternate site due to the threat of inclement weather.
