
Rio wins twice at Cola Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of Rio Grande softball team got its 2025 campaign off to a rolling start on Friday afternoon, posting a pair of mercy rule-shortened wins in the opening round of the Cola Classic Round-Robin hosted by Columbia International University.
The RedStorm dumped Brewton-Parker (Ga.), 8-0 in six innings, before hammering Point (Ga.) University, 12-0 in five innings.
Brewton-Parker dropped to 2-2-1 with the loss, while Point slipped to 1-2.
Sophomore Maddie Engler (Crestline, OH) went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to fuel Rio's game one effort, while junior Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) had two hits, including a first inning grand slam home run.
Junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) also had two hits and drove in a run, while freshman Lindzie Runions (Poca, WV) went 2-for-3 in her collegiate debut.
Senior Madi Ogden (Williamsburg, OH) started in the circle for the RedStorm and went the distance, tossing a one-hit shutout. She walked two and struck out 10.
Kaylee Odum went the distance and took the loss for the Barons.
Lexi Bradshaw had the lone hit for BPU.
In the nightcap, Rio Grande scored early and often with four runs in both the first and third innings and two runs in the second and fourth frames.
Sophomore Trinity Davis (Hartsville, SC) went 3-for-3 and drove in a run, while Adams finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI and Ogden was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Nigella Reck (Covington, OH) added two hits and a run batted in of her own in the winning effort, while freshman Madison Brentlinger (Indian Lake, OH) and junior Emma Elkins (Logan, WV) both doubled.
Senior Hannah Beers (Springfield, OH) started in the circle and got the win, allowing three hits and a walk over three shutout innings.
Kendall Holbrook started and lost for Point, allowing four runs in her only inning of work.
Avrianna Wapniewski went 2-for-2 in the loss for the Skyhawks.
Rio Grande will wrap up the weekend on Saturday with two more contests, facing Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist at 10 a.m. and Columbia (S.C.) College at 3 p.m.
