Rio blanks Bears en route to sweep

     SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Madison Ogden threw a two-hit shutout and Sydney Campolo followed with a five-hit shutout of her own as the University of Rio Grande rolled to a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia University-Tech, Tuesday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at Little Creek Park.
     The RedStorm posted an 8-0 mercy rule-shortened win in the opener, while a first inning run proved to be enough in a 1-0 triumph in the nightcap.
     Rio Grande pushed its record to 22-12 overall and 14-8 against conference foes.
     The Golden Bears fell to 9-23 overall and 5-16 in the RSC.
     Ogden, a junior right-hander from Williamsburg, Ohio surrendered just two fifth-inning infield singles in the opener, while walking one and fanning 11. She also helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
     Sophomore Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) led the RedStorm offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) also went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in the victory.
     Rio Grande grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH), but blew things open late by scoring four times in the fourth, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth.
     Meghan Gill started and lost for Tech after allowing three hits, five walks and two runs over three-plus innings of work.
     Game two saw the best outing of the season by Campolo, a senior from New Lexington, Ohio. The right-hander scattered four singles and a double, while walking just one and striking out four.
     Campolo outdueled WVU-Tech's Taylor Dickerson, who was the hard-luck loser after allowing just four hits and the one run. SHe walked three and struck out nine.
     The game's only marker came inside the first three batters of the game when senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) led off with a single, stole second with one out and rode home on a single along the right field line by Ogden.
     The Golden Bears left two runners on in the first inning and stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the sixth, but failed to dent the plate.
     Olivia Barnett had two hits and Hailea Skeens had the double in the loss for WVU-Tech.
     Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Saturday when it hosts - WVU-Tech - for a twin bill at Rio Softball Park.
     First pitch for Saturday's opener is set for 1 p.m. EDT.
