ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - A pair of late rallies by the University of Rio Grande came up just short, as the RedStorm dropped both ends of their Saturday afternoon River States Conference softball doubleheader to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College at the SMWC Softball Field.
The host Pomeroys won the opener, 4-3 in eight innings, while hanging on for a 6-4 triumph in the nightcap.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods improved to 20-11 overall and 13-4 in the RSC with the sweep.
The two losses left Rio Grande at 20-12 overall and 12-8 in league play.
Game one proved to be a back-and-forth affair.
Rio Grande took a 1-0 first inning lead thanks to an RBI double by sophomore Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH), but the Pomeroys grabbed their own advantage in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Lyric Krause.
The RedStorm tied the game in the fifth on a run-scoring single by junior Madison Ogden (Williamsburg, OH) but, again, SMWC moved back in front in the bottom of the inning after an RBI single by Jaleigh Crawford.
Rio Grande tied the game in the seventh when sophomore Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) reached on an error and scored on a one-out single by senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH). Junior Boo Sturgill (Wheelersburg, OH) bunted Brisker into scoring position, but the inning ended when Ogden fouled out to third.
Ogden retired the Pomeroys in order in bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but Rio was unable to push across a run in the eighth.
SMWC won it in the bottom of the eighth when Abbi Henderson led off with a walk and scored on a one-out double by Krause.
Brisker and Ogden had two hits each in the loss for Rio.
Makayla Jackman and Jaselyn Conn both doubled for St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
Marin Jacobs got the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing seven hits and the three runs in a complete game effort.
Rio Grande grabbed a second inning lead in game two on a run-scoring hit by Perry, but the Pomeroys exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Jasmine Kinzer had a two-run single to highlight the rally, while Conn, Krause, Nevaeh Pender and Henderson all had RBI singles.
The RedStorm made it interesting after the first two batters were retired in the seventh when Ogden homered, Adams walked and junior Peyton Young (Mt. Orab, OH) clubbed a two-run homer to make it 6-4.
The rally - and the game - ended moments later, though, when senior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) was retired on a groundout to shortstop.
Brisker finished 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.
Junior Hannah Beers (Springfield, OH) started and took the loss for the RedStorm, allowing eight hits and six runs over four innings.
Summer Rocha started an got the win for SMWC, allowing five hits, three walks and a run over 4-1/3 innings.
Crawford finished 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Pomeroys offensively, while Henderson had two hits and Kinzer had two RBI. Conn also had a double in the win.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Little Creek Park in South Charleston, W.Va. to face West Virginia University-Tech.
First pitch is set for noon.
