Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Madison Ogden tossed her fourth one-hit shutout of the season in game one, while Kali Brickman took a perfect game into the fifth inning of a game two shutout as the University of Rio Grande swept a doubleheader from Alice Lloyd College, Friday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at Rio Softball Park.
The RedStorm posted a mercy rule-shortened 8-0, five-inning victory in the opener before recording a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Rio Grande finished the day at 15-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
Alice Lloyd slipped to 12-14 overall and 1-9 in the RSC with the two losses.
The Eagles managed just two baserunners in the opener against Odgen - a bunt single by Aubree Laster in the second inning and a walk to Mckenzie Orfield in the third inning.
Ogden, a junior from Williamsburg, Ohio, struck out nine en route to her eighth win in 10 decisions.
Rio Grande scored single runs in both the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead, then scored three times in both the fourth and fifth frames to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.
Sophomore Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) got the scoring underway with a second inning sacrifice fly and finished the game with a three-run double in the fifth. She finished 2-for-2.
Senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) and Ogden both went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, while sophomore Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) also drove in a run. Ogden's hit total included a double.
Orfield started and took the loss for the Eagles.
In game two, Brickman - a senior from Huber Heights, Ohio - retired the first 14 batters she faced before losing her perfect game on a walk to Carlee Muncy. Moments later, her no-hitter went by the wayside on a clean single to left by Audrey Mowell.
Brickman escaped the threat, though, went Ashley Wells lined out to first.
Alice Lloyd also put two runners on in the sixth inning thanks to a leadoff walk to Chloe Taylor and a one-out single by Ellie King, prompting Rio Grande head coach Chris Hammond to lift Brickman in favor of junior Hannah Beers (Springfield, OH).
Beers escaped the jam and then put down the Eagles in the seventh to secure the victory.
Rio Grande did all of its offensive damage in two innings, scoring twice in the first and three times in the third.
Redshirt sophomore Riley Hughes (Wheelersburg, OH) weilded the hot bat for the RedStorm with an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the third.
Senior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) also had an RBI in the winning effort.
Maleigh McDaniel started in the pitcher's circle and went the distance in the loss for ALC.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action, weather permitting, on Saturday when rival Shawnee State University visits for an RSC twin bill beginning at 1 p.m.
The Bears are coached by former Rio head coach Kristen Bradshaw.
