BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Top-seeded Georgetown College ended the University of Rio Grande's most successful season to date, posting a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-21) triumph over the RedStorm, Friday afternoon, in the semifinal round of the Mid-South Conference Men's Volleyball Tournament at Bowling Green High School's Studle Financial Arena.
The Tigers, who are also ranked No. 7 nationally, improved to 23-6 with the victory - their second in a span of four days against Rio after the two teams completed their respective regular season schedules against each other on Tuesday night.
The win also sends Georgetown into Saturday's championship match against No. 2 seed Campbellsville, which ousted Cumberland (Tenn.) University in Friday's other semifinal contest.
Rio Grande, which was seeded fourth in the six-team tourney, finished its season at 13-19. The 13 wins represented a single-season high for the third-year program.
Georgetown finished with a sizzling .500 attack percentage in each of the first two sets and finished with a .394 mark for the match (36 kills, 10 errors, 66 swings).
The Tigers led just 17-14 in set one before closing the period on an 8-1 run for the early match lead.
GC scored six of the first seven winners in set two and cruised throughout the rest of the stanza, while set three was tight throughout.
Rio trailed just 11-10 after a kill by junior Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH), but the Tigers responded with the next three points to open up a four-point advantage and the RedStorm got no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Ryan Gunn and Krzysztof Kowalski had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead Georgetown, while Kacper Dobrowolski had 31 assists and 10 digs in the winning effort.
Adam Szewinski had two solo blocks and three block assists for the Tigers, while Kowalski also had two solo blocks and one block assist.
Senior Caden Donaldson (Jackson, OH) had 14 kills to lead the RedStorm, which finished with 29 kills and 17 errors in 82 swings for a .146 attack percentage.
Sophomore Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 24 assists for Rio, while junior Seth Mohr (Canton, OH) had six digs and Miller-Bross tallied a trio of block assists in a losing cause.
The match marked the final appearance in a Rio uniform for both Donaldson and Mohr.
