BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Campbellsville University pulled away in the first set and rolled over the next two stanzas, dealing the University of Rio Grande a 25-22, 25-14, 25-14 loss in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-South Conference Men's Volleyball Tournament, Friday morning, at Ephram White Gymnasium.
The Tigers, who were seeded fourth in the six-team tourney, improved to 11-14 with the win and advanced to Friday night's semifinal round against top-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) College.
Rio Grande, the No. 5 seed, closed its season at 7-20 with the loss.
The RedStorm trailed just 14-13 in the opening set following a kill by sophomore Sam Winhoven (Pickerington, OH), but Campbellsville reeled off five of the next six winners to take control.
Rio hung close and still found itself within 23-22 following a dual block by Winhoven and junior Caden Donaldson (Jackson, OH), but the Tigers scored the final two points to win the opening set and grab the early match lead.
Campbellsville never trailed in set two and closed the stanza on a 13-5 run to take a commanding advantage in the match, while a 12-2 run by the Tigers in set three erased an early 6-3 deficit and secure the eventual victory.
Campbellsville finished with a .235 swing percentage, totaling 32 kills and 13 errors in 81 total attacks.
Jakob Zum Kolk had 10 kills to fuel the winning effort, while Diego Betancourt had 23 assists and Fernand Morales had 12 digs. Betancourt and Morales - along with Andres Laboy - also had two service aces each.
Leonel Fernandez and JoVeaun Banks added three block assists each in the victory.
Rio Grande finished with 24 kills and 22 errors in 80 attacks for a .025 swing percentage.
Donaldson led the RedStorm with 11 kills, while sophomore Seth Mohr (Canton, OH) tallied 19 assists and sophomore Bobby Meifert (Bolingbrook, IL) had 12 digs.
Winhoven finished with four block assists.
