BEREA, Ohio - Troy Mason and Tyler Jenkins both set new school records for the University of Rio Grande men's track and field team during Baldwin-Wallace University's Harrison Dillard Twilight, which wrapped up on Friday at George Finnie Stadium.
Mason, a sophomore from Grenville, Grenada, finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.30, breaking his own school record by .11 and coming within .01 of first-place finisher Micah Gremling of Walsh University - the No. 2-ranked NCAA Division II runner.
Mason's time, ranked 8th nationally in the NAIA, hit the "A" qualifying standard for the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, which are scheduled for later this month in Marion, Ind.
Jenkins, a junior from Barnesville, Ohio, hit the "A" standard by virtue of his fifth place finish in the 5,000-meter run.
His time of 14:22.69 broke the previous school mark of 14:23.94 set by Darren Miller in 1987.
While none of the marks hit national qualifying standards, Rio did have four other individual and one relay Top 10 finish at the meet.
Graduate senior Chase McClay (McDermott, OH) was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.78, while sophomore Kasy Science (Marietta, OH) and freshman Keegan McKinney (Baltimore, OH) finished seventh in the 800-meter run and the shot put, respectively.
Science finished in a time of 1:52.43, while McKinney's toss covered 14.90m.
Sophomore Rowen Gerlach (New Haven, WV) also placed 10th in the Hammer Throw with a heave covering 51.43m, while the RedStorm's 4x100 relay team - featuring junior Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH), Mason, McClay and junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH) - was fifth in a time of 41.45.
