Rio Grande Sports Information
EATON, Ohio - Scott Gray scored one of the University of Rio Grande's three first half goals and assisted on another, leading the RedStorm in a 5-0 rout of Indiana University East, Saturday evening, in River States Conference men's soccer play at Eaton High School.
Rio Grande improved to 8-4-1 overall and 7-0 in league play with the win, securing no worse than a No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the upcoming RSC Championship.
Head coach Scott Morrissey's squad can claim the league's regular season title with a win over Oakland City University in its regular season finale on Saturday.
The Mighty Oaks (8-3-4 overall, 5-0-1 RSC) would win the regular season title with a win at IU East on Thursday and a victory over Rio on Saturday.
Gray - a senior from Strathaven, Scotland - assisted on a goal by freshman Pedro Izaias (Sao Paulo, Brazil) just under 11-1/2 minutes into the match to give Rio Grande what proved to be the only marker it would need before netting an unassisted goal eight minutes later for a 2-0 advantage.
Freshman Giorgos Mavris (Larnaca, Cyprus) made it 3-0 with 9:36 remaining before the intermission, scoring off of a feed from senior Diego Martinez (Santiago, Chile).
The RedStorm added to their cushion just under 4-1/2 minutes into the second period when freshman David Palade (Constanta, Romania) scored off of a touch by sophomore Lucas O'Donnell (Leeds, England), while sophomore Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil) set the final score with an unassisted goal with 33:56 left in the contest.
Rio Grande finished with a commanding 29-3 edge in shots, including a 15-2 advantage in shots on frame, in addition to having all four corner kick chances in the contest.
Senior keeper Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) recorded a pair of saves in a clean sheet effort for Rio.
Peter Lamprou started and went the first 64:34 in goal for IU East (7-7 overall, 2-4 RSC), allowing all five of the Rio goals and coming up with nine stops.
Elijah Williamson had one save over the final 25:26 for the Red Wolves.
Saturday's Rio-Oakland City game is set for a noon kickoff at Evan E. Davis Field.
