
Rio men spread the wealth in rout of Midway

MIDWAY, Ky. - Eight different players scored goals as the University of Rio Grande controlled things from start to finish in an 8-0 rout of Midway University, Thursday afternoon, in River States Conference men's soccer action at Midway University Stadium.
Rio Grande improved to 7-4-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play with a sixth straight win.
The host Eagles, who had a three-game unbeaten streak snapped, slipped to 4-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the RSC.
Rio Grande finished with a 31-3 edge in overall shots, including 14-2 in shots on frame, and also owned eight of the game's 10 corner kick chances.
The RedStorm scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the contest and never looked back.
Freshman Pedro Izaias (Sao Paulo, Brazil) netted an unassisted marker just 3:08 into the match and freshman Giorgos Mavris (Larnaca, Cyprus) followed with another goal off of a touch by senior Joe McInnes (Airdrie, Scotland) just 6:16 later to make it 2-0.
Freshman Felipe Braga (Presidente Prudente, Brazil) scored off an assist by sophomore Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with 11:30 left before the break to give Rio its 3-0 halftime advantage, while Kawata also assisted on a goal by freshman David Palade (Constanta, Romania) just over eight minutes into the second half to push the cushion to 4-0.
The RedStorm's final four markers of the day came in a span of just 10-1/2 minutes.
Kawata found the back of the net himself via a pass from freshman Estevao Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil), before Goncalves scored off an assist by sophomore Lucas O'Donnell (Leeds, England) with 28:02 left to make it 6-0.
O'Donnell added an unassisted goal with 21:38 remaining and freshman Lucca Schmidt (Taubaté, Brazil) had an unassisted score of his own with 19:49 left to set the final margin of victory.
Senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) worked the first half in goal for Rio and earned the win, recording a pair of saves in the process. Freshman Alix Jounay (Lorient, France) did not allow a goal in the second half.
Midway also used a pair of net-minders.
Starter Connor Vincent allowed all eight goals and had three saves in his 70:11 of playing time, while Bryson Lynch also had three stops over the final 19:49.
Rio Grande was scheduled to return to action on Saturday with a neutral, non-conference match against Georgia Gwinnett College at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.
However, the match has now been cancelled as a result of no officials being assigned to the contest.
The RedStorm's next scheduled game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26, against Indiana University East at Eaton High School in Eaton, Ohio.
