Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Joe McInnes scored midway through the first half and the University of Rio Grande made it stand up, posting a 1-0 win over West Virginia University Tech, Saturday morning, in a contest dubbed the River States Conference Men's Soccer Match of the Week at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm won for a fifth consecutive time, improving to 6-4-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
The Golden Bears, who along with Rio have resided at the top of the RSC standings in recent seasons, slipped to 5-5-2 overall and 3-2 in league play as a result of the loss.
McInnes, a senior from Airdrie, Scotland, found the back of the net on an unassisted score with 23:28 remaining in the first half to snap a scoreless deadlock.
McInnes now leads the team with five goals, all of which have come in his last four games played.
Rio Grande finished with a 19-10 advantage in total shots, but scoring opportunities were much fewer to come by. The RedStorm held the edge there, too, with a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
WVU Tech did have a 7-6 cushion in corner kick chances.
Senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) stopped all three Golden Bear shots on frame, including two in the second half.
Luka Felix recorded five saves in a losing cause for Tech.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Thursday afternoon with another RSC contest at Midway University.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
