Rio men rally late, slip past Pomeroys
Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - For the longest time, it looked like the University of Rio Grande men's soccer team was destined for "one of those days".
With less than 10 minutes remaining, head coach Scott Morrissey's squad enjoyed a substantial advantage in scoring opportunities, yet found themselves staring at a 1-0 deficit to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
But the RedStorm offense woke from its mid-day slumber - and how - in the waning moments of their River States Conference meeting with the Pomeroys.
Tommy Munoz Salazar netted the equalizing marker before assisting on a go-ahead goal as Rio Grande scored three times in a span of 4-1/2 minutes to post a 3-1 victory, Thursday afternoon, at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm improved to 3-4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play as a result of the dramatic win.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the RSC with the loss.
The Pomeroys were outshot 18-2 over the first 80 minutes of the match, yet found themselves leading 1-0 as a result of Jaime Gayol's score off of a short crossing touch from Emile Jamois inside the 18-yard box with 19:21 left in the first half.
Munoz Salazar, a sophomore from San Jose, Costa Rica, finally broke the ice for Rio with an unassisted goal with 9:29 remaining to knot the score at 1-1.
The RedStorm missed out an opportunity to take the lead when SMWC net-minder Harry Jackson made a dazzling save on a penalty kick by freshman David Palade (Constanta, Romania) just under three minutes later, but the go-ahead marker did come to fruition with 6:03 left when Munoz Salazar and senior Diego Martinez (Santiago, Chile) had touches which led to a score by senior Joe McInnes (Airdrie, Scotland).
An insurance goal came just 67 seconds later when freshman Giorgos Mavris (Larnaca, Cyprus) found the back of the net off of a feed from freshman Estevao Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) .
Rio Grande finished with a 26-3 advantage in shots, including 19-1 in the second half.
The RedStorm also had a 9-1 advantage in shots on frame and an 8-2 cushion in corner kick chances.
Senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) did not record a save, but got the win in goal for Rio Grande.
Jackson had six saves in the loss for the Pomeroys.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Brescia University in another RSC contest.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
