RedStorm roars to life for semifinal win over Pioneers
Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - For the University of Rio Grande, the wakeup call didn't come until after a lackluster first half performance.
When the phone finally did ring, though, things looked a lot more like a typical performance from the RedStorm.
Four different players scored second half goals and head coach Scott Morrissey's club posted a 4-1 win over rival Point Park University, Wednesday afternoon, in the semifinal round of the River States Conference Men's Soccer Championship at a sun-splashed Evan E. Davis Field.
Rio Grande, the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament bracket and the No. 6 team in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll, improved to 14-1-2 with the victory and punched its ticket to Saturday's championship game.
The RedStorm will face top-seeded West Virginia University-Tech - an 8-3 winner over Oakland City University in the other semifinal match - in Saturday's 3 p.m. title tilt at the YMCA/Paul Cline Soccer Complex in Beckley, W.Va.
Point Park, the tourney's No. 3 seed, finished 10-6-3 with the loss.
Rio Grande dominated the final 45 minutes of play after failing to put a shot on frame in the opening half.
The RedStorm outshot their guests, 9-1, in the second stanza and all but one of the shots was on goal.
Freshman Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil) got the scoring underway just under 11 minutes into the period when he found the back of the net via a touch from senior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile).
Kawata then had the assist on a goal by senior Joe McInnes (Airdrie, Scotland) just over two minutes later, but the Pioneers sliced the deficit in half with 24:06 left to play on an unassisted goal by Phillip Harder.
Rio Grande put the win away, though, by tacking on a pair of insurance scores inside the game's final 10 minutes.
Freshman Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) netted an unassisted goal with 9:50 remaining and graduate senior Julian Fally (Vienna, Austria) set the final score a little over two minutes later by scoring off a pass from sophomore Marti Puigsegur Calvo (Barcelona, Spain).
The RedStorm finished with a 16-4 edge in shots overall, allowing the Pioneers just one shot after halftime.
Graduate senior keeper Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) recorded one save in the winner effort for Rio.
Eduard Garcia recorded four stops in goal for Point Park.
Saturday's title game will feature the league's regular season co-champions.
The RedStorm and Golden Bears played to a scoreless draw in the regular season meeting, but Tech earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament as a result of a tie-breaker.
