
Rio men close fall slate with 8th place finish

ATHENS, Ala. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team closed out the Fall portion of their 2024-25 schedule with an eighth place finish in the FireHawk Invitational hosted by Tennessee Southern University.
The two-day tourney wrapped up on Tuesday at the Canebrake Golf Club.
The RedStorm, who fell from a sixth-place tie after Monday's opening round, finished at 31-over par 607.
Host UT Southern won the team title with a 13-over par total of 589, while Midway University was second at 18-over par 594. Faulkner (Ga.) University and Talladega (Ala.) University tied for third at 21-over 597.
Luke Mattox of Calhoun (Ala.) Community College and Chris Brignet of Spring Hill (Ala.) College tied for medalist honors in the 68-player field after both finished at 3-under par 144.
Rio Grande's top score individually belonged to sophomore Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who was among seven players tied for 10th place at 5-over par 149.
Also representing the RedStorm was sophomore Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico) and senior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), both of whom finished as part of a four-way tie for 22nd place at 7-over 151; junior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who was among four players tied for 41st place at 12-over 156; and sophomore Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV), who tied for 60th place at 24-over par 168.
