Rio men finish runner-up at RSC Fall Preview

     DANIELS, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team posted a runner-up finish in the River States Conference Fall Preview, which completed its two-day run on Tuesday at Glade Springs Resort.
     The RedStorm, who were also in second place following Monday's opening round, finished the tournament at 16-over par 592 - 13 strokes behind team champion Midway University.
     West Virginia University-Tech was third at 17-over 593.
     Medalist honors went to Midway teammates Hayes Mason and Jack Bedell, both of whom finished at 3-under par 141.
     Rio Grande's top individual finish came from junior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who tied for third place with Oakland City University's Leo Molino at 2-under 142.
     Portilla advanced five positions in Tuesday's final round with the low round of the day - a 4-under par 68.
     Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Eliseo Martinez (Malaga, Spain) and sophomore Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), both of whom were part of a five-way tie for 13th place at 7-over 151; sophomore Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico), who finished 18th at 8-over 152; and senior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who was one of seven players tied for 20th place at 9-over par 153.
     Rio freshman Fernando Cirajas (Valladolid, Spain) competed as an individual and was one of seven in the field of 58 golfers who tied for 32nd place at 12-over 156.
     Rio Grande is set to return to action in a pair of events on Monday, Oct. 14.
     The RedStorm varsity will be involved in the Gibson Bay Match Play event on Monday and Tuesday in Richmond, Ky., with the reserve squad will be in match play as well at Hocking College.
