Rio's Portilla ties for 2nd at Blue Raider Classic

COLUMBIA, Ky. - Rodrigo Portilla finished in a tie for second place to lead the University of Rio Grande men's golf team to a fifth-place showing in the Blue Raider Classic hosted by Lindsey Wilson College.
The two-day, 54-hole event concluded on Tuesday.
Portilla, a sophomore from Sevilla, Spain, finished with a 9-over par 204, tying Cumberland (Tenn.) University's Tom Scullion.
Portilla, who was part of a three-way tie for fifth place after the tourney's first 36 holes, had a final round 4-under par 67. He finished seven shots behind medalist Callum Waugh of Lindsey Wilson, who completed play at 16-under par 197.
Lindsey Wilson's "B" team won the team championship with a 22-under par score of 830, edging LWC's "A" squad by four shots. Cumberland University's "A" team was third at 6-under par 846.
Rio Grande finished at 23-over par 875 as a team.
In addition to Portilla, the RedStorm was represented by senior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH), who tied for 30th place at 11-over par 224; senior Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH), who was part of a tie for 33rd place at 13-over par 226; junior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who was one of three players tied for 35th place at 14-over par 227; and freshman Magnus Fabian (Stuttgart, Germany), who tied for 40th at 16-over par 229.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action in the River States Conference Fall Preview, Oct. 2-3, at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W.Va.
