RedStorm puts four on All-RSC teams

Rio Grande/RSC Sports Information
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande placed four players on the 2024-25 All-River States Conference Men's Basketball Team.
The all-conference teams and major award winners, which were determined through balloting of the league's head coaches, were announced last week as the RSC Championship tournament got underway.
Senior Eric Butler (Orlando, FL) represented the RedStorm on the first team, while junior Trey Robertson (Waverly, OH) was a second team pick and the junior duo of Jaelin Johnson (Fairmont, WV) and Jaylin Fox (South Haven, MI) were third team selections.
The quartet led Rio to a 19-10 finish after a season-ending loss to Indiana University Kokomo in the quarterfinal round of the tourney.
Butler averaged 14.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for the RedStorm, while Robertson averaged a team-best 14.6 points and 4.1 assists per contest.
Johnson finished at 13.2 ppg and 5.3 rpg, while Fox averaged 10.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 1.2 blocks per game despite appearing in every game and starting only once.
Shawnee State's Tre Beard was named the RSC Player of the Year, while Brescia's Damian Garcia was honored as the RSC Newcomer of the Year and Scott Cornett of Alice Lloyd College was named RSC Coach of the Year.
Beard, a fifth-year guard from Chillicothe, Ohio, averaged more than 19 points per game on the season for the Bears, who charged up the RSC standings to win the East Division title on the final day of the regular season.
Beard was lethal from long range, knocking down 95 three-pointers on the season, a total that ranks second in the nation, and shooting at a 47.7 percent clip.
Garcia arrived at Brescia from South Arkansas College and made the most of his first season in the River States Conference. The Houston, TX native currently ranks third in the nation in points per game, scoring 24.3 per contest for the Bearcats.
Garcia failed to be held below 10 points this season, and has eclipsed 30 points seven times, including a 30-point effort in Brescia's victory over Indiana University East in the RSC quarterfinals.
Cornett was selected as the River States Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Alice Lloyd to a 10-6 conference record and a spot in the RSC Tournament. The Eagles were picked 11th in the preseason coaches' poll, but came just one game shy of winning the East Division title after winning eight of 10 games to close the regular season.
Cornett, who is also an alumnus of ALC, is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Eagles.
The All-RSC first team consisted of eleven players, due to a tie in the voting. Another tie kept 10 on the second team, with nine players represented on the third team.
As a testament to the parity in the league this season, nine teams earned a first team selection, with IU East and regular season champion St. Mary-of-the-Woods the only schools to earn multiple first team selections. The overall leaders were Alice Lloyd and Rio Grande, who both placed four players among the top 30 in the league.
Five more teams - IU Kokomo, Midway, Shawnee State, St. Mary-of-the-Woods and WVU Tech - all had three All-Conference selections, while IU East and Oakland City had two each. Brescia, IU Columbus, and IU Southeast rounded out the selections with one player each.
All 12 River States Conference schools placed at least one player on the All-Conference teams, with nine of the 12 members earning multiple selections.
Along with Beard, Garcia and Butler, the first team also included Antuane Allen and Jake Johnson from IU East; Greg Jenkins and Shon Tupuola of St. Mary-of-the-Woods; WVU Tech's Thomas Hailey; IU Southeast's Lane Lauderbaugh; Max Newman of IU Kokomo; and Ben Soumahoro from Alice Lloyd.
Robertson was joined on the second team by Koji Anderson and Jared Strickland of Alice Lloyd; Shawnee State's Cory Gardner; Noah Harris and Evan Kretz from IU Kokomo; Oakland City's Hunter Johnson; Darrin Martin from WVU Tech; and the Midway duo of Decoreio Smith and Amari Wales.
Fox and Johnson were part of a Third Team which also featured Jacob Curry of Alice Lloyd; Taeron Hogg from St. Mary-of-the-Woods; Midway's Nick Keeton; Owen Law from IU Columbus; Aamir Mack of Oakland City; Shawnee State's Ezra McKee; and Adam Seams of WVU Tech.
