GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Defending national champion Georgetown College shook off a slow start in set one before cruising in each of the next two periods for a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-16, 25-12) over the University of Rio Grande, Friday night, in River States Conference men's volleyball action at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
The No. 8-ranked Tigers improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in their RSC debut with the win.
Rio Grande, which had a four-match win streak snapped, slipped to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.
The RedStorm led 11-10 in the opening stanza before Georgetown reeled off four straight winners as part of an 8-2 run that gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish.
Rio Grande never led in either of the final two sets.
Set three saw Rio trailing 11-8 before Georgetown reeled off eight straight winners to take control and finish off the match.
Robin Puss had 12 kills to pace the Tigers, who finished with a .364 attack percentage as a team (38 kills, 10 errors, 77 attacks).
Finn Heinemann had 28 assists and three service aces in the winning effort, while Ben Meyers totaled 10 digs and Adam Szewinski had two solo blocks and a block assist.
Miguel Ariza Vega also had two solo blocks for GC.
Rio Grande finished with a season-low .024 swing percentage (25 kills and 23 kills in 82 attacks).
Freshman Daniel Rivas (Valle Del Cauca, Colombia) had eight kills to pace the RedStorm, while junior Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 22 assists and freshman Maaz Khan (Peshawar, Pakistan) tallied eight digs.
Senior Cam Griffith (Columbus, OH) added a pair of solo blocks in a losing cause.
Rio Grande returns to action when it wraps up in weekend conference road swing at Brescia University.
