IU Southeast takes down RedStorm men

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Indiana University Southeast trailed just once - a little more than a minute into the game - and pulled away for an eventual 83-65 victory over the University of Rio Grande, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men's basketball action at the IUS Student Activities Building.
The RedStorm dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-2 against RSC foes with a second consecutive loss.
IU Southeast pushed its record to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in league play.
The host Grenadiers trailed 3-2 after a three-point goal by Rio senior Jaylin Fox (South Haven, MI) with 18:47 remaining in the first half, but a jumper by Trent Hinkle just under a minute later put the hosts back in front to stay.
IUS built a 14-point cushion with a little more than a minute left in the first half before settling on a 13-point edge, 44-31, at the break.
The Grenadiers increased their advantage to as many as 18 points, 56-38, after a three-pointer by Jaden Johnson with 15:10 left to play, although Rio Grande responded with a 14-3 run - capped by a trifecta from senior Trey Robertson (Waverly, OH) - to close the gap to just 59-52 with 11:04 remaining.
Southeast quelled the comeback attempt by the RedStorm, though, by scoring 14 of the game's next 20 points over a span covering 5-1/2 minutes and taking a 15-point lead, 73-58, after a layup by Bailey Temming with 5:34 still to play.
Rio Grande got no closer than 13 points three different times the rest of the way.
Hinkle scored 21 points to lead a quartet of double-digit scorers in the winning effort, while Nathaniel Hoffman had 18, Jordan Treat tossed in 11 and Ethan Haddaway finished with 10.
Haddaway also had 10 rebounds, while Hinkle and Treat handed out four assists apiece.
IUS shot just over 50 percent overall (31-for-61), while also going 10-for-26 from beyond the three-point arc (38.5%) and 11-for-12 at the free throw line (91.7%).
The Grenadiers also had just five turnovers.
Rio Grande connected on 42 percent of its shots overall (22-for-52), while also going 15-for-21 at the free throw line (71.4%) and outrebounding the home team, 34-31.
Senior Delon McCloud (Grand Rapids, MI) led the RedStorm with 18 points, while Robertson had 16 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
Fox also hit double figures by finishing with 10 points and senior Jaelin Johnson (Fairmont, WV) snared seven rebounds.
Rio Grande will look to end its losing slide on Tuesday night when it faces West Virginia University-Tech in another RSC affair at the Beckley-Raleigh County Armory and Convention Center in Beckley, W.Va.
